DODD,
MEAD, 1902
Reprint (First Printing 1873) 6.5”x 4.25,” 400 pages
THE
VOLUME: Book is in VERY GOOD
condition. Sturdy, tight petite volume. Hinges wholly intact.
I've tried to make my pictures so they would enlarge to about
actual size. Corners are lightly bumped, but very little edge
wear. Lower front corner of upper board has a bleached spot
visible in photo. The Harrison Fisher paste-down has a few spots
of soiling/foxing. The closed page edges have some light foxing
as do the front and rear end papers and the title page and
frontispiece. The text pages are predominantly very clean and in
good condition.
E.
P. Roe was a Christian minister
who enlisted during the Civil War and was the chaplain of his
company. At the close of the war he was stationed at Highland
Falls and in charge of the Presbyterian church there. There he
wrote his first book Barriers Burned Away,
a story based on the factual Chicago Fire.
One
account I read said the E. P. Roe was the most popular American
writer of his time. Sadly, he died suddenly of a heart attack at
age 50 in 1888.
He was
one of my personal favorites as a young adult. I discovered
him quite by accident at a “Friends of the Library” sale. I
was especially fond of books written in the late 1800s so he was
a great find for me. In many ways his stories reminded me of
another Christian writer, Grace Livingston Hill. If you haven't read him, I hope you will consider giving him a try. He wrote at least a dozen novels. Probably much more than that.
