THE
DUSTJACKET:
An Original dust jacket.
Exceedingly scarce dust jacket in POOR
to FAIR condition only, but has done a wonderful
job of protecting the book. Harrison Fisher illustration remains
wholly intact on the DJ, with chipping and print losses at spine
ends and some chipping of rear panel without loss of print. Also
some light circular stains clearly visible in photo. The dust
jacket is now protected by an archival quality dust jacket cover
with some ultra-violet protection built in.
THE
STORY: A novel of old Virginia. In reading it one
lives again in the patrician elegance of all their freedom and
all their limitations. In the midst of those quiet people—some
rich in worldly goods, all rich in birth and station—is born a
man with the unrest of genius. He has been a colonel in the
Northern army, a fact that makes his coming back to his ancient
Southern estate not quite so joyous as he had hoped. His
courtship of a charming girl, the mischievous interference of
his own son, his disappointment and final settling down are told
with many touches of humor and pathos. Miss Seawell's
delineation of this man's character and her sprightly humor,
playing on the foibles of the early nineteenth century
aristocrats, show her as a brilliant writer and a deep thinker.
