WILLIAM
R. SCOTT, 1953
8.25” 5.5,” 150 pages
THE
VOLUME: Book is in VERY
GOOD condition. Book color is a paler blue than
the photo suggests. Tight and sturdy. Appears never to have been
read. Very clean book inside and out. Very light edge wear.
Corners are lightly bumped. Lower board edges also have a very small bumped spot. Child owner
Doreen has written name in pencil on the first blank end paper.
Very clean cream-colored pages slightly darker along edges.
Short 1/2”x 1” (or less) tape remainder marks on book inner
boards and dust jacket flaps where they were once united. Tape
no longer there, but left a stain.
An
approved selection of Parents' Magazine Book Club For Children
printed on rear of dust jacket but not the rear board.
THE
DUST JACKET: VERY GOOD
dust jacket, complete and colorful. Moderate wear at flap fold
corners, spine corners and upper rear spine fold. A few short
edge tears. The photo was taken without a dust jacket cover to
make it easier to take the picture. A protective cover is
included with the sale.
THE
PUBLISHERS: “Every child wants a horse, and Aran,
the young Mayan Indian hero of this story, is no exception. In a
little hut in a village on the shores of Lake Atilan in
Guatemala he dreams of owning a horse.
From
his grandfather he hears tales of his people's past greatness—of
the Mayan discovery of the calendar, their invention of writing,
their domestication of corn, their treasures, and their ancient
books. And he hears, too, stories of how Spanish soldiers came
over the mountains on their horses and conquered his ancestors,
who had never seen horses and were frightened of them.
One
day in the forest with his father he sees danta, a little wild
animal native to Guatemala. Arana returns to the forest alone to
try to capture the little danta. His adventures in the forest
make absorbing and satisfying reading.”
Mrs.
Frey wrote her story to acquaint her young daughter “with the
Indians of Central America . . . descendants of the Maya who
comprise such a large percentage of the population of Central
America and about whom so little is known.”
