ALFRED
A. KNOPF 1930, Believed
First Edition Appears to be a fairly scarce edition,
rarely seen in a dust jacket. I could find only one copy of an
original dust jacket, priced at $150.
THE
VOLUME: GOOD+
condition. Tightly bound, hinges fully intact, but slightly
soft. Showing wear along sides of spine, spine tips and board
corners. Corners are lightly bumped. A bit of fraying beginning
at lower spine corner, which has been treated with fray-check.
Light soiling to exterior as seen in photo. Spine cloth has
darkened a bit.
Interior
is quite nice. A few spots of soiling on the edges of the closed
text-block, a small spot on the first end paper, but pages are
predominantly very clean and a nice uniformly creamy color. A
high quality paper showing no signs of yellowing. A gift
inscription on the first end paper and a small, attractive
bookseller's sticker on the rear end paper.
THE
DUST JACKET: A Carefully Restored
FACSIMILE copy
of the very scarce Dust Jacket which was issued with this
edition. It was made from a high resolution scan of an original
dust jacket in good condition. The jacket was printed using
archival quality paper and inks (80 yr inks) and preverved in an
archival dust jacket cover with a little bit of ultra-violet
protection built in. This dust jacket can also be purchased
separately upon request.
THE
STORY: “This is Horler at his
best, and that means not a dull moment from start to finish.”
I've been reading this story myself and can testify to the
truth of the publisher's statement. It is a thrilling mystery in
the tradition of THE THIRTY NINE steps. It reminds me very much
of the Hitchcock version anyway. Gerald Holiday is on the
Riviera express, and definitely feeling bored, when a beautiful
woman enters his train compartment and begs him to accept a
package and the commission to deliver it to a specified address.
The hero soon learns that, whatever it is, people are willing to
kill to try to get it.
