THE RELIGIOUS
TRACT SOCIETY, London. Not dated. Pictorial front
cover and spine suggest turn of the century. But interior
frontispiece looks more like 1920 so I'm not sure of the actual
printing date of this copy. Book has a color frontispiece by
Stan Terry. 312 pages plus ads for “Carey
Library for Girls.”
THE VOLUME: This
is a lovely Good+ edition. The book is predominantly very clean
both inside and out, with the following defects. The spine leans
a bit. The upper board is slightly curved and has a crease in
the upper right section. (Please refer to picture). The first
endpaper has been removed, but hinge feels sturdy.
THE STORY: I'm
afraid I have no idea what the story is about, but inscription
below the frontispiece picture reads: “Pixie answers the
advertisement.” The list of other titles by this author
suggest this is part of a girl's series. That list includes:
About Peggy Saville,
More About Peggy,
Pixie O'Shaughnessy,
The Love Affairs of Pixie,
Betty Trevor,
A Household of Girls.
The publisher's name suggests the book definitely passed muster
with a Christian organization.
The author wrote 33 books and many short
stories. Her first work (a short story) was published after her
12 year old daughter found the manuscript and sent it into a
short story contest. She won the contest.
