A Mezzaluna is a staple of Italian households, named after its shape: half (mezza) moon (luna).
This specialty cutting instrument is very handy for chopping the small stuff, like onions, parsley, basil, etc. Nona (Grandma) made her ever popular home made Pesto sauce with a Mezzaluna. Used on a cutting board or in a wooden bowl, it emulates the rocking motion of a chef knife using only one hand to operate.
This item is very old, possibly dating back to the late 1800's. The top portion is wood, bottom half is steel (?) blade.
