Killing of a Chinese Bookie 1976/1978 Trebuchet MS
Killing of a Chinese Bookie 2-disk set (1976/ 1978)

Ben Gazzara - Seymour Cassle

two-disk set - Criterion Collection with director's cut

After a few earlier triumphs, John Cassavetes' 1976 film was booed by angry theatre-goers who wanted their money back. He pulled the movie after six trying days.

Star Ben Gazzara later told the story so well of how much work and heart went into the film only to see theatre patrons hate it and tell others not to waste their money. The first release ran 135 minutes, and was mostly well-received by critics for the film's honesty in portraying a small time strip club owner who gets way over his head in gambling debt.

Cassavetes' re-cut the film two years later eliminating 30 minutes, adding a new beginning score and making it, well, a little less easy to follow. Both versions are offered in this Criterion Collection set. Disk 1 is the original longer version Disk 2 has been re-cut, and includes wonderful interviews from 2004 with Gazzara and producer Al Rubin about the audience's reaction, a stills gallery, and an audio interview with Cassavetes about Killing of a Chinese Bookie. Still today is among the top films in camera work and realism, a modern film noir. For light shipping the DVDs come in a protective sleeve, no art, and costs $4 in the U.S. and $9 outside for a double DVD, due to consecutive rate increases by USPS. Both are high definition digital transfers with restored image and sound.

We also sell Cassavetes other films in their collector's editions, Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976), Husbands (1972); Faces (1968) and Shadows (1959). The director, who died in 1989 is beloved among film-makers as an actor's director and the father of independent cinema. Cassavetes' focus is on the human condition, less so with a framing a good shot though many say the hand-held camera work was ground-breaking.
