We sold this fine Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui entitled "Spring Rain at Gokoku-ji Temple" dated 1932. It is an early printing from a presentation issue printed by the Doi Publishing Company and published by them circa 1940, which was during the artist's lifetime.
The image measures 9-1/2 x 14-1/4 inches on a sheet of chain lined washi paper measuring 10-1/2 x 15-1/4 inches with Doi watermark in the upper left hand corner.
A fine printing with tight block registration. Sheet has mat stain, is time struck and light fading occurred in the Temple (additional bleach out is due to photographing light), but otherwise colors are strong and even. Mat needs to be replaced. Verso; Remains of glue spot and paper unsettled (not creased), from being tipped onto original backing folder in top center margin. Tape remains along edges as seen in the images with top still attached to mat. Aside from the minor defects mentioned there are no water stains, tears, creases, or any other major defects to describe.
Auction is for print and mat only - no frame is included.
