Offered today from my personal collection of high end antique knives is a very neat & rare old English MOP Silver fruit knife made by the outstanding silversmith George Unite in the late 1800`s. The Hallmark G.U. signifies his work and you can see the five hallmarks on front side of the silver blade. Tip of blade is slightly bent, which is common with these delicate silver blades.Handles are a beautiful translucent Mother of Pearl and in perfect condition. They also have been engraved with leaves & flowers on front side and two star shapes on back side. Silver fruit knives were made in England, mainly Sheffield and Birmingham, beginning in the 18th century. The English also made folding silver fruit knife and fork sets for traveling. Most English silver work is hallmarked. England has had a hallmark system since the 14th century. Official silver assay offices were opened in Sheffield and Birmingham in 1773. Fruit knives made in either place after that date will be marked accordingly. A full hallmark includes the following stamps: city code(a crown for sheffield, an anchor for Birmingham), sterling mark(a lion passant), a year code (a letter), maker`s or "sponser`s" (seller`s) initials, and duty stamp (the monarch`s profile). Before 1830, sometimes only the sterling mark and the duty stamp were used. The duty stamp was dropped in 1890. Many English silversmiths made fruit knives. Two whose work was outstanding were George Unite (G.U.) of Birmingham and John Yeomans Cowlishaw (J.Y.C.) of Sheffield.
A number of factors affect the value of Victorian fruit knives. These include the color of the pearl(the more colorful the better), the quality and extent of the engraving or pinwork, the age (a good silver hallmark book is essential for this), the shape and size, the number of blades, and the maker. Most important, a knife that is well proportioned and pleasing to the eye is worth more than a heavy ostentatious piece.(From Levine`s Guide to Knives And Their Values 3rd Edition)
