  Description:

Offered here is an important oil on canvas portrait of the Spanish Conquistador - Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo - the founder of San Diego, California, and who also served as Captain under the famous Conquistador, Hernan Cortez.

The work, which dates to circa 1915 to mid 1920s, was painted by well listed artist George Joseph Seideneck, also a co-founder of the Carmel Art Association of California. The painting measures 24 x 20 inches and it is set in it's original and beautifully hand carved, black enamel and Gold leafed wooden frame.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

George Joseph Seideneck was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 4, 1885. He was descendant of a Czechoslovakian family of architects who for two hundred years built castles in Bohemia. He began his art training in Chicago at Smith Art Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1911 he went to Europe and studied at the Royal Academy in England and then went to Munich and studied under Carl Marr and Walter Thor. Three years later, he returned to the U.S. and taught at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and Academy of Design. In 1918 he went to California, and during a sketching tour in Carmel, he met artist Catherine Comstock. They married in 1920 and spent two and a half years traveling and studying in Europe.

Always active in the local art scene as an organizer and painter of portraits and landscapes, George Seideneck remained a resident of Carmel until his death on March 7, 1972. His memberships include: Chicago Art Club; Chicago Society of Artists; Carmel Art Ass'n (co-founder in 1927). Exhibited: California State Fairs; Santa Cruz Art Annuals; Society of Western Artists, De Young Museum, 1949 (award). Works held: Federal Bldg (Chicago); Carmel Art Ass'n., and many other public and private collections.

CONDITION:
The painting has but one actual flaw. A small repaired tear in the canvas near the left ear. A patch covers the repair but it is unknown if an older patch or anything else exists under it. The paint, which was applied rather heavily, is very pliable and does not show any losses or cracking.

The highly ornate frame is exceptional and nearly flawless. It is entirely hand carved and secured at the corners by lap joint construction. The Subject's name "Cabrillo" is hand painted in block letters along the bottom center of the frame in black over the black enameled background. The original frame maker's label is still attached at the bottom, verso. Overall, both painting and frame are in extra fine condition.
