Europa (Zentropa) (1990)

Jean-Marc Barr, Max Von Sydow, Lars Von Trier (director)

2-disk Criterion Collection

Fans of Danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier seem truly fanatical about his work, even what they call the duller movies. Not to be said of Europa, also known as Zentropa, which comes here in a 2-disk set. The film was released in 1990 and is considered the third in a trilogy of Von Trier's that includes the Element of Crime and Epidemic. Von Trier's most recent film in the U.S. was Anti-Christ, with so limited release probably due to its dark and intense nature.

Europa (Zentropa) is about a young American who goes to post-World War 2 Germany to work with his uncle on the sprawling railway system. He soon falls for the owner's daughter, and as such gets sucked into a conspiracy involving the country's occupiers. Lovers of this movie say the cinematography is mesmerizing, from the first frame hypnotically narrarated by Max Von Sydow. Told with a nod toward Hitchock and film noir, Europa remains one of Von Trier's most notable creations. The movie is in English and German, with English subtitles optional.

The first disk has the film, which runs almost two hours, and is shot in black and white without digital effects, but much creative camera work. This Criterion version is a restored high-definition transfer. Features include "The Making of Europa" and original theatrical trailer.

Disk two has a documentary called "Trier's Element" which features an interview with him and footage from Europa's set; "Anecdotes from Europa, a 2005 documentary; Interviews from 2005with cinematographer Henning Bendtsen, and the composer, costume designer and more and a 2005 interview with Von Trier. His other movies include Riding the Waves, Dogtown, and Dancer in the Dark. For light shipping, both disks come in protective sleeves, no cover art, and ship for $3 in the US, $4 to Canada and $5 to Europe. The format is Region 1 (US/CA)
