We offer for sale this fine etching of a young girl seated, "Mademoiselle Nathalie Walkonsha" by Edgar Degas. This second state impression is from the canceled plate, and of the rare limited edition that was printed on Japon nacre paper of which only 150 prints were published by Ambroise Vollard, between 1919 and 1920. There exists only 2 proof impressions of this subject from the plate before it was canceled in about 1867.
Reference: Reed & Shapiro Edgar (Degas, the Painter as printmaker) No 12, page 35.
The image (between platemark), measures 4-5/8 x 3-1/2 inches. The sheet upon which it is printed measures 14 x 10-3/4 inches.
CONDITION:
A strong, clear impression printed with light plate tone. Vertical crease 1 to 1-1/4 inches on each side - apparently folded to fit in a frame.
Verso: Two cloth hinges at top and tiny bit of paper loss at top edge of sheet. Penciled numbers at bottom right side. Otherwise, a superb example of etching by one of the great masters.
