The Desert King Watermelon, a yellow fleshed watermelon variety, is considered by many to be the most drought resistant watermelon on the market. This watermelon has an unusual pea green colored rind and a deep, rich yellow colored flesh intermingled with grey-black seeds. A few red fleshed watermelons may also be ocassionally produced. The individual watermelon itself has a round shape and typically averages 30 pounds in weight.
Although the rind of this variety is quite thin, the Desert King Watermelon typically holds up well in transit for market gardeners. Reportedly, the watermelons will hold on the vine for up to a month after becoming ripe and will store very well in the kitchen, making this variety less a far less wasteful one than other watermelons.
