Listing Description.The Bahama or (GORGONIA) purple Seafan, sometimes called the Venus Seafan. This family of Seafans can be found in the tropical Atlantic and through the Caribbean. There have been a few found in many other parts of the World's seas. However, they are considered a tropical animal. Bahama seafans are found in tidal pools no deeper than 3 feet and in depths to 20,000 feet.
Most colonize near rocks or coral reefs, so the can attach themselves and form arms to capture small current drifting animals for food. Seafans are not really fans, they are large colonies of tinny stinging celled animals; much like a sea anenome. A colony of these animals can capture and feed on a creature much larger than itself. Listing Picture. If you notice the seafan or colony of stinging sea creatures looks to have jagged edges.
They were captured as a much larger colony some grow several hundred feet tall and wide. The picture shows various sizes of the seafan or parts of the original seafan that has been sectioned to a shippable size. When you recieve your seafan it will have jagged edges; which can be trimmed to a rounded piece. The various colors are also shown. Parts of the fan may be more purple or lighter in color.
This is color variation is due to parts of the fan receive more or less light and other enviromental factors. When your shipment arrives their may be small pieces of the fan loose in its container. The reason for this is due to the fact, we do not trim the specimens when we recieve them. We feel you are the best judge as to how to shape your fan |
