George C. Scott directed this play about one of the most notorious civil war prison camp known as Andersonville. Years earlier Scott played the prosecutor in this play and was so taken with it, and the story behind it he wanted to bring in talent to dramatize real-life events in 1865. Was Henry Wirz a monster who let thousands of men die of starvation and disease or a scapegoat for irate union victors?
