L. BURT, 1904. A very rare and
very early reprint edition. Illustrations by F. H.
Townsend. Lovely Victorian Binding. 320 pages plus ads.
THE
VOLUME: This is a Very
Good copy of an extremely scarce title. To
find a copy with Townsend's illustrations is even more unusual.
I've been on the lookout for one, having enjoyed my own copy of
the book so much. This particular A. L. Burt is exceptional in
another way. The cover illustration on the book perfectly
matches the story-line, as you can see by comparing it to the
dust jacket, which borrows from the frontispiece of the first
American edition. The few other reprints I found did not have
this same pastedown illustration, although they also sounded
like very handsome books.
This
particular volume is in excellent condition. Binding feels firm.
A crack in hinge area after the first endpaper, but still feels
solid. A tidy inscription on the first endpaper. Predominantly
clean pages, with a few pages with fingertip type smudges or
light soiling. Pastedown is not high contrast. The lady's skin
and background blend somewhat. Please see pictures for best
indicator of what I mean.
THE
DUSTJACKET: A
NEW FACSIMILE copy
of an original custom creation, which combines authentic
Victorian decorative elements with a colorized version of the
black and white frontispiece illustration by F. H. Townsend,
which appeared in the First Edition. The jacket was printed on
one sheet of acid-free paper by an archival inkjet printer (80
yr. inks), and preserved in archival plastic. The dust jacket is
plain, except for the front panel.
