This a beautiful 24 k Gold Newari Thangka Painting from Nepal that I got on my recent trip.
The Newari are a small community of artists in Nepal with a special style know for its brilliant color and intricate detail.
The Green Tara Deity was brilliantly made and the painting has detailed filigree like work that is most impressive.
Some history of the Green Tara:
Tara represents the entire enlightened activities of all Buddhas and hence she is called the mother of the Buddhas of three times. It is said in a sutra that Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva saved and ferried countless suffering beings over from the sea of birth and death. One day, when Avalokiteshvara looked at the misery of the world, he shed tears from his eyes out of great compassion. The tears turned into a lotus flower from which appeared a white and green Tara who said to him, “Please don’t be sad. We’ll assist you in liberating living beings, although they are countless in number, the power of our vow is also immeasurable.”Since then they have been liberating countless numbers of living beings every day. The name of Tara was thus known to all buddhas in the ten directions.
Green Tara appears as a young beautiful maiden. Her body is green in color. She has one face and two arms; she wears a crown bedecked with five Buddha images.She wears all kinds of bodhisattva ornaments studded with jewels and celestial garments of varied color. She sits on a lotus throne in lalita attitude in half-lotus posture. Her left hand shows the gesture of refuge vows and in her right hand, the varada mudra, because she is quick to answer the petitions of those who seek her aid.Tara is known as the great liberator from eight kinds of danger or fears. The cultivation of Tara sadhana will eliminate all demoniac and karmic obstacles, eradicate disaster and lengthen one’s life span.
No noticeable flaws in the artwork. The canvas is in good shape just some small tattering along the bottom left corner and slight smudging in the red border only which does not extend into the artwork area at all.
I know whoever gets this painting is going to be thrilled with it. It is really a masterpiece. I was told that this painting took over four months to complete.
Size: 25.8" tall and 21.2" wide ( 65.5 cm tall and 53.8 cm wide ) including border. 23.5" tall and 18.75" wide ( 59.7 cm tall and 47.6 cm wide ) excluding border.

Items can usually be shipped out within 2 days of purchase. The USPS Postal service is very reliable. For domestic USA a Delivery Confirmation number will be purchased by seller for items over 25.00. Insurance is optional and may be purchased by the buyer. For international purchases Insurance and tracking is provided with USPS Express Mail services only, however the Regular Air mail service has been very reliable.
Returns:
If you are not satisfied for any reason with your item please return it within 14 days for a complete refund including original shipping costs. Buyer just has to pay for the return postage.
