Russian Purple tomatoes are an indeterminate heirloom variety that is known for its dark purple plum-shaped fruits. Indeterminate means that they will continue producing until the plants are killed. Russian Purple tomatoes, originally from the Ukraine, are meaty and juicy with a nice sweet flavor. They are great for sauces and salsas. For those of you with acid reflux or heartburn, Russian Purple tomatoes may be a more suitable choice because they are lower in acid than other varieties. The fruits are crack-resistant, measuring 3-4” and weighing about 4-6 ounces on average. Maturation occurs in approximately 75 days.
Growing Information:
Plant your seeds at a depth of 1/8”. Seeds can be started indoors for an early start, but the seedlings will need to be gradually exposed (hardened off) to the outdoor weather. If starting indoors, you should use additional light such as a fluorescent light fixture. This will help ensure sturdy seedlings that will not flop over in the outdoor elements. Otherwise, you can start the seeds outdoors when the weather has warmed and the nights are consistently above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Optimal germination occurs at between 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit. The seeds are best off being started in a seed starting mixture and then transplanted to a rich well-draining soil with plenty of compost at about 4”. When transplanting, bury the seedlings up to the first set of leaves. They can be grown in large containers or in the ground. If you are growing in containers, it is especially important that you have extra drainage. Adding perlite will help achieve this. Use a 2-foot diameter pot, and do not add more than one plant per pot. Use a tomato cage for each plant and tie it for support as it grows. If you are growing in pots, you should start your plants off in partial shade and expose them to more sun as they grow. In the ground, choose a location with full sun. You should shade your seedlings early on, even with something like a lawn chair, and give it more sun as it grows. Be sure to mulch you mature plants as this will preserve moisture and reduce disease from dirt that may splash up during watering or rain. You should also remove the bottom leaves. Many growers also choose to remove the suckers, which is the little shoot that grows between the stem of the plant and the main branches.
