A.
L. BURT, 1912 Reprint This is one of the
earlier novels written by Elinor Glyn, who became
well-known for writing rather daring novels for her time.
THE
VOLUME: GOOD
condition. Book feels pretty sturdy and hinges are intact. Rear
hinge a little loose perhaps. There is a ½ inch tear in
the paper on the rear board near
the rear hinge. The spine leans and is slightly faded. The
covers are soiled. There are some pen or pencil marks on the
front cover (see photo). A very tiny hole in the cloth along the
rear spine edge, but no fraying. Light edge wear over all.
Corners are quite bumped. No inscriptions or other writing, but
a child also did some scribbling on the front and rear end
papers inside the book. I've done my best to erase these marks,
but not with absolute success. You can still see a faint residue
where they were. Click
here to see photo.
Text
pages are predominantly very clean. I saw creases to the upper
edge of two pages and evidence of a very light bumping to the
upper corner of the text block. A very nice reading copy in
the lovely scarce dust jacket.
THE
DUSTJACKET: A Carefully
Restored FACSIMILE copy
of the rare dust jacket, which sold with this edition.
I cannot quite read the artist's entire name. But the last name
is definitely Boehm. The jacket was made
from a scan of an original in very good condition from my own
collection. It was printed on one sheet of acid-free paper by an
archival ink jet printer (80 yr. inks), and preserved in
archival plastic.
THE
STORY: “Halcyone
is really a study in personality, and the dominating figure in
it is the heroine who gives her name to the story—Halcyone La
Sarthe. When introduced to us she is a mere child—an orphan
living with two maiden aunts in poverty and seclusion.
Peculiarly sensitive to every form of beauty, she is keenly
alive to all the manifestations of nature about her. She has
made the half-wild manor park of the estate on which she lives
her domain and has peopled each dell with its fairies, each tree
with its dryad.
Into
the quiet life of Halcyone comes in time one John Derringham, a
graduate of Oxford and a brilliant but self-centered young man.
His interests are with his career, and to advance it he has
planned to marry a divorcee, Mrs. Cricklander. But Halcyone's
quiet personality attracts him and he falls genuinely in love
with her, as she does with him. They become engaged, but
Derringham meets with an accident, and in the subsequent period
of convalescence he falls under the spell of Mrs. Cricklander
and his engagement to her is announced. How Halcyone's
personality holds him to the course of honor which the
engagement demands, and yet wins him in the end, brings the
story to a close.”
