BOBBS
MERRILL, 1910 First Edition
Lovely
brown toned illustrations by Arthur I. Keller.
THE
VOLUME: A GOOD copy of
this fairly rare edition. Text pages and illustrations are for
the most part very nice and most are clean. The edges of the
text block have darkened and show spots of soiling, usually not
extending onto the text pages. I saw light, sporadic soiling on
about a dozen more pages. The book's worst flaw is a tear on one
page with a chunk missing at the outside edge, hence the low
price. I've repaired it with virtually invisible archival tape
and taken a picture. The tear does not affect the readability of
the pages as can be seen in the photo. The first end paper has
been removed, but hinge area has been tightened and the book
feels sturdy and tight. Covers show soiling and light edgewear.
The white printing on the spine has been rubbed to about 50
percent intensity.
THE
DUSTJACKET: A Carefully
Restored FACSIMILE copy
of the beautiful first edition dust jacket, which sold with
this edition. I
believe the dust jacket artist is F.
Graham Cootes, but can't be certain. The
signature is not very clear, but it looks likely to be that
artist. The original jacket background is a kind of metallic ink
and I've endeavored to replicate that in my facsimile. The
jacket was made from a scan of an original in very good
condition, printed on one sheet of acid-free paper by an
archival inkjet printer (60-80 yr. inks), and preserved in
archival plastic.
THE
STORY: A
young woman enlists the help of a youthful lawyer to help her
solve the sudden disappearance of her father. Mystery and
romance intermingled with charm and wit by one of my favorite
authors.
