Marine Engines and Equipment Text by United States Power Squadrons Engine Maintenance Committee Publisher: The Education Dept. of United States Power Squadrons Copyright: 1972 FOURTH EDITION / Illustrated
The Educational Department of the United States Power Squadrons carries out its primary and constitutional objectives "to establish a high standard of skill in the handling and navigation of yachts; to encourage the study of the science of navigation, and small boat handling.
The importance of your boat engine cannot be overemphasized. It is literally the "heart" of your boat. No one can deny the importance of the heart to one's life. Also, another recognized fact is the knowledge in the things he can do and the pace at which any project may be accomplished. So it is with your boat. Unless your engine is in good condition, you are always doubtful as to the possibility of arriving at your intended port of call. An engine failure at the wrong time could well mean the "death" of your boat and, more important, your own life may end up as a statistic in the ever increasing lists of small boat causalities. Surely, this is one aspect that is abhorrent to every serious boat skipper.
Fortunately, a boat engine is made by man, can be understood by man, and, in most cases, can be repaired by man. Of course, we have boat engine "doctors" to which one can send a boat's "heart" in order to give it the fine care it so rightfully deserves. However, it behooves every power boatman to know the rules of "first aid" in order to get his boat and its valuable cargo back to port where the expert attention for the boat's "heart" may be received, if required.
It is not necessary for the average power boatman to have the advanced training the engine "doctor" requires, in order to do the right thing in times of emergency. However, just as the proper application of first aid requires a basic understanding of the human body, it is also essential that the power boatman know how his engine works.
The power boat operator frequently encounters troubles with auxiliary equipment such as lights and wiring, galley equipment, heads, and so forth. The care and maintenance of items such as these is also required "first aid" knowledge for the power boatman.
This, then, is the tenor of this text. No attempt will be made to explain the thermodynamic cycles, the complex design features, or the complete overhaul of the boat engine. Rather, it is intended to adhere closely to the knowledge and practices required to conduct small boat engine and equipment "first aid."
