Universal Wisdom by James Edward Gaylor Publisher: Vantage Press Copyright: 1961 FIRST EDITION
This book is not intended to be a literary gem for the intelligentsia, but a book of common sense, expressed in simple words for the improvement of all mankind.
Since World War II, there has been much discussion of the subject of overpopulation and its adverse effect on the world, with the alarmists on the one hand, and a multitude of illogical doubters on the other. Such discussions are snowballing in number just as the world population is doing.
When this book was begun, the author was considering only the problem of overpopulation throughout the world. However, after delving more deeply into the subject, the realization became apparent that one cannot consider overpopulation without taking into account religions, ideologies, education, economics, science, politics, psycohology, and a world of integrated elements.
The entire book is highly controversial, because there are many people who say that "Nature takes care of itself," or "We dare not argue about religion," and other such statements to confuse the ignorant. Religion cannot withstand the microscope of searching analyses. This book has been made as factual and as truthful as possible. It must be realized that many years went into the analysis of the problem and the author's financial resources and time were limited. This is really a task for the United Nations but they appear to be powerless to do anything constructive along this line because of the politics and religions of the various member nations. Foundations and other organizations cannot move for the same reasons.
The book deals with certain questions of interest to human lemmings. It must touch on even the most important questions briefly, since the possible range of such subject matter is vast, and all human activities are very closely integrated. It is a book that much deal mostly with problems of sex and hunger; certainly very important subjects, sometimes held to be most sensational in their various phases and implications.
Failure to understand the close relationship between sex and hunger -- between man and his environment -- can have one result only for the race of men, and each individual -- life that will continue to increase in uncomfortableness and decrease in happiness.
For the reader to understand this work he must be far removed from the work-a-day world and placed in a philosophical mood. He must realize that he is not the center of THE Universe, but only the center of HIS Universe. He, especially, must realize how infinitesimally small and unimportant he is in the vast Universe, or Universes.
