William Le Queux
(1864-1927) was a Anglo-French journalist and writer of mystery
and espionage thrillers. He was also actually a wireless
pioneer himself, who broadcast music from his own station
before radio was generally available, an expertise which no
doubt aided and inspired while writing this tale.
MACAULAY:
1923 First Edition I've paired this book with a
facsimile of the British Cassel edition, which used the same
illustration.
THE
VOLUME: Book is in GOOD
condition. Sturdy and tightly bound. Hinges are wholly
intact. The spine has darkened with age. The covers are faintly
soiled—the rear cover having several more prominant spots.
Corners are lightly bumped. Spine tips and board corners are
very worn. Cardboard showing on the corners. Short tears at
spine tips—a longer half-inch tear at lower front spine
corner (visible in photos.)
Predominantly
clean slightly age-toned pages in good condition. Faint spots
and smudges on the end papers and a very few faint spots here
and there on a few text pages. Outside edges of the closed text
block are dusty. Ownership inscription and the date 1925 on the
first blank end paper.
THE
DUSTJACKET: A
Carefully Restored FACSIMILE of the Cassell dust jacket issued
with this title. The
Macaulay First Edition Dust Jacket uses the same identical
illustration, but continues around the spine of the jacket as
well so that the man's rear leg is completely visible.
This
jacket was made from a scan of an original from my own
collection, restored to look like-new, then printed on one
sheet of acid-free paper by an archival ink jet printer (80-100
yr. inks), and preserved in archival plastic.
THE
STORY: I'm afraid I haven't yet read this story and
the dust jacket flaps are entirely devoted to listing other
book titles, but the illustration on the dust jacket certainly
makes it look interesting.
