SYNOPSIS: SS Sturmann Klaus Stumm was a survivor. Survivor of three savage years on the Russian front. Survivor now of months of continuous fighting in Normandy as the Americans under General Petton threatened to break through. The years of ceaseless warfare, shellfire and hunger had turned him into an inhuman, ruthless killer: of the enemy, of his own men if they did not obey at once, of civilians, men and women. Rudi Scherfe, 17, fresh from school, watched him as he fired his MG 42 Spandau machine gun in lethal stuttering bursts. Fear burned like vomit in Scherfe's throat as he realised that only his kill-crazy superior was likely to get them out alive and that he must keep close to this monster. But now the Sherman tanks were advancing again, spraying death as their tracks churned through the blood-streaked mud....
