Odysseus, or Ulysses as he is name in this stunning translation of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, is a hero who strides across the ages. The epic poetry of Homer emerged from the distant songs of Greek’s Bronze Age, and its heroes remain household names. In The Odyssey the historic adventures started by the Trojan War and depicted in The Iliad now focus on Ulysses as he journeys home after ten years of war.
Through the stories of The Odyssey the fates of some characters from The Iliad are explained and also the famous Trojan Horse devised by Ulysses is described. The adventures roll through episodes with the Cyclops, Circe, Calypso, and the Sirens until Ulysses finally reaches his kingdom of Ithaca ten years after leaving the battlefields of Troy . He finds that all is not well at home, where ambitious and rowdy suitors beset Ulysses’ royal household, drinking, eating, and exhorting Penelope to accept that Ulysses is dead and marry a new man, who will then become King of Ithaca. At this point the cunning and craft for which Ulysses has become famous blooms fully as he plots his return and the epic climaxes in explosive violence. The stress of those left abandoned by long war and the social deterioration that can happen on the home front are major themes of this epic poem.
