Samantha at Saratoga or, "Racin'After Fashion" by Josiah Allen's Wife ~ Marietta Holley F.M. Lupton Publishing Company New York, 1887Decorative cover is worn, better than poor condition, staining, corner and edge wear. Gilt title on spine still visible, much wear to spine, stain, tears along side and edges. Hinges beginning to crack, covers attached, binding tight. Name and date written in pencil on front endpaper, otherwise pages are clean and unmarked, no writing, marks, a few pages with very small tears along upper edge that do not affect text or illustrations, a few dog-eared pages, slight age toning, pages are in very good condition. Forty-nine (49) full-page illustrations, plus several other endpiece illustrations. Illustrations in very good condition. See scans for a few examples.
Marietta Holley is also the author of "Samantha at the Centennial", "My Opinions and Betsey Babbit's", "My Wayward Pardner", and other books. It was uncommon for women to write during this time, and when they did, they usually used a fake (male) name. It's interesting that the author's name is given, but only after she is referred to as her husband's wife! Interesting story to read, and despite the cover wear, still collectible for antique fiction and/or early women writers collections.
Book measures 7 inches by 4 3/4 inches, 373 pages.
