Mrs. Eldridge provides a brief history of the Godey's Lady's Book -- the "Vogue" fashion magazine of the 1830s through the 1870s. There follows the story of how she came to make Godey style dolls and dollhouses, and photographs of her achievements. But the book is mostly about teaching the reader how to make the dolls she loves, with clearly drawn doll patterns, basic dress patterns and 15 variations, and furniture patterns, from chairs to the mantel to the Seth-Thomas clock atop the mantel. Charlotte Eldridge is press agent No. 1 for Sarah Josepha Hale, who was editor of Godey's Lady's Book from 1837 to 1877. She became acquainted with Mrs. Hale when she (Mrs. Eldridge) began her hobby of making Godey Lady Dolls...Mrs. Hale was one of the foremost feminists of her time and Charlotte Eldridge in studying her life became fired with ambition to go and do likewise...(she) sold the Godey Ladies on royalty to the Madame Alexander Doll Company who manufactured them and put the Godey Lady Dolls on the market.An important and collectible addition to the dollmaker's craft library.
Condition: Good to very good. All pages clean and intact, slightly tanned appropriate to its age, cloth covers intact and straight, with bumped corners and edge wear to the spine, including a 1" tear at the bottom of the spine which doesn't affect the binding. |
