Beauty and the Beast, by Kathleen Norris, 1928, A L Burt & Co., red cloth binding, 341 pp. No - this is *NOT* the Disney version, or even the classic story by Walter Crane! This antiquarian hardcover was written by Kathleen Norris (1880-1966), considered to be the most popular women's writer of the 20th century and compared to Henry James in writing style. Many of her hundreds of stories became popular radio soap operas and screenplays. She "borrowed" the title for this tale of love between the beautiful young Janey and her many suitors, only one of whom was to become Mr. Right.Here is an excerpt:"This fellow is the father of the child whose life you saved, Janey, And Moullin's in love with you," Gordon said simply."He isn't! I've not spoken to him twice!" she said, scarlet.Well, I guess that was enough," the American drawled simply. And Lord Rountrey added, with a rueful laugh, "Miss Janey, if fewer men were in love with you, somehow the whole bally mess might have been avoided, don't you know?"A reluctant smile touched her anxious flushed young face. ...
Book is in clean, very good condition, remarkable for its age. Red cloth covers are unsoiled; minor fraying at the top corner of the spine; small bumps at the corners; all pages are clean, straight, and intact. I suspect it was read once and put on the shelf for about 70 years. About 8 pages in the middle show 1/2" tears at the bottom as though the book were pressed against something narrow and sharp - not obvious. Single owner's name written in pencil inside front cover.
